In the latest episode of Broadway Time at Carmine’s, Joel Crump sits down with Lakisha May and Matt Wilkas, stars of the wildly unhinged hit Ginger Twinsies. The pair reflect on the chaos and joy of building a show that thrives on parody, mishaps, and audience energy.

Lakisha, who recently appeared in Alice Childress’ Wine in the Wilderness and originated a role on Broadway in Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, spoke about the freedom of clowning on stage after performing in serious dramas. “It’s actually such a gift,” she said. “I get to stretch as an actor, take risks, and show my range. Booked and blessed.”

Matt, known for his Broadway turn in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and television roles including AJ & The Queen and So Help Me Todd, shared how the show fulfilled something he’d written in his journal: “I wanted to do a show where I surprised myself every night. This show provides that beautifully.”

Both actors agreed that the audience has become the heartbeat of Ginger Twinsies, fueling performances with raucous laughter and even showing up in red wigs. As Joel summed up, “It’s one of the most unhinged theater pieces I’ve ever seen, and that’s what makes it so special.”
