David Foster, the legendary producer and songwriter, is no stranger to crafting iconic music, but BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical marks a new milestone in his career. As the show prepares to make its Broadway debut, Foster reflects on the journey from its Chicago run to the huge theater scene in New York.
“It’s like we never stopped,” Foster says of returning to BOOP! after its initial run in Chicago. “We just picked up where we left off, and I’d say we left Chicago at about a seven and a half. I think we’re going to hit Broadway at a nine and a half.”
Despite decades of experience in the music industry, Broadway remains fresh ground for Foster. “I’m still basically a newbie,” he admits. Crafting music for BOOP! has been an exhilarating process for him. “There were no limitations,” he says. “It’s like, ‘Hey, we need a song here that takes her on this journey. She’s in a nightclub and you just go write something. You can do anything.’” He compares the creative freedom to his time with Earth, Wind & Fire, where he was encouraged to "just play."
For Foster, Betty Boop isn’t just a character. She’s an icon. “Next to Coca-Cola, she’s probably top five in recognizability worldwide.” When asked what he would do if he could spend a day with Betty Boop, Foster’s response is a nod to his deep love of music history: “I’d want to ask her about all the great music she was involved in during the 1930s... Cab Calloway and all the great musicians from that era.”
