At the recent press day for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast national tour, stars Kyra Belle Johnson (Belle) and Fergie Philippe (Beast) talked to us about the magic behind this beloved story, the rehearsal room energy, and what it means to breathe new life into such iconic roles.

“We just did our first run through yesterday, and it hit us so hard,” Johnson shared with excitement. “The cast is so full of heart and talent. It’s moving fast, but there’s so much love in the room.”

Philippe echoed the sentiment. “We were all a mess after that run. We realized we knew exactly what we were doing and, more importantly, why we’re doing it. There’s real connection happening, and that’s where the magic begins.”

The production, directed by original Broadway creative Matt West and written by Linda Woolverton, gives both actors the freedom to bring their personal touch to the characters. “It’s not about reinventing Belle and Beast,” Philippe explained. “It’s about bringing new shades of humanity to them. The creative team has been incredibly generous, treating it as a true collaboration.”

For Johnson, Belle was always more than just a favorite princess. “Her strength, intelligence, and forgiveness were qualities I admired growing up. Getting to embody that while honoring the original is truly a dream come true.”

Of course, the conversation wouldn’t be complete without a dive into Disney nostalgia. Both actors lit up as they reflected on their childhood love of Disney. Johnson grew up going to Disneyland with her family. “It’s in my DNA,” she laughed. Philippe recounted seeing The Little Mermaid on Ice at just three years old, calling it a “visceral experience” that cemented his lifelong love for Disney storytelling.

The pair closed out the interview with a rapid-fire Disney round. Tarzan and A Goofy Movie topped their film lists, Space Mountain and the new Tron ride wowed them in the parks, and if Johnson could play anyone else in the show? “Chip,” she said without hesitation. As for Philippe, Babette was his top choice!

As the tour prepares to launch, it’s clear that Beauty and the Beast is in passionate hands. With heart, humor, and a whole lot of Disney magic, this production promises to bring joy to audiences across the country, one enchanted rose petal at a time.
