Neil Patrick Harris, Julianne Hough and Austin Scott to Star in Broadway Revival of Damn Yankees

Broadway is stepping up to the plate! Neil Patrick Harris, Julianne Hough and Austin Scott will lead a newly reimagined production of Damn Yankees, marking the musical’s first Broadway revival in more than 30 years. Performances begin March 24, 2027, at the Marquis Theatre, with opening night set for April 20. Harris will star as Applegate, alongside Hough as Lola and Scott as Young Joe.

Directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo, the revival features a new adaptation by Will Power and Doug Wright, with additional lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. The musical’s original music and lyrics are by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, with a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop. This version moves the story to the early 2000s, following devoted Baltimore Orioles fan Joe Boyd as he dreams of seeing his team return to glory. When a charming stranger and his captivating accomplice offer him a chance to change his fortunes, Joe makes a deal that comes with a catch.

The Broadway engagement follows a sold-out run at Arena Stage, where the production earned 13 Helen Hayes Award nominations and won eight awards, including Best Musical. The original Damn Yankees opened on Broadway in 1955 and won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

“Damn Yankees has always been one of our great American musicals, but I wasn't interested in simply reviving it,” said director and choreographer Sergio Trujillo. “This ‘revisal’ preserves the heart, wit, and soaring score that audiences love and is a real opportunity to bring joy back into the theater. Damn Yankees is a celebration of America, and I hope audiences see themselves in it and remind them of the magic that only a great American musical can deliver. Let's play ball!”

Major League Baseball and its production label, MLB Studios, will also partner on the production, a collaboration the announcement describes as a first for a Broadway musical. Lead producers are Lia Vollack, Haley Swindal and Julie Boardman. For Swindal, the connection between baseball and Broadway is personal. Her grandfather, longtime New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, also invested in Broadway productions, including Applause and Seesaw.
