Tony and Grammy Award winner Patina Miller is known for her powerhouse performances in Pippin, Into the Woods, Sister Act, and Power Book III: Raising Kanan. But offstage, she has found a new passion that’s shaping both her artistry and her community impact: running.

This summer, Patina served as a mentor and ambassador for New York Road Runners’ Run for the Future program, a free six-week initiative that introduces high school girls from across New York City to running and wellness. The program culminated earlier this month at the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K, where Patina ran alongside the young women she had been mentoring, celebrating their first-ever race and honoring the legacy of Harlem’s cultural trailblazers.
Now, she’s lacing up once again for the first-ever Broadway Mile on September 7, part of the New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile. The event, hosted in partnership with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, will bring together Broadway performers, crew, and theater fans to run side by side in support of the theater community. Patina will be there, representing not only Broadway but also the power of running to connect, heal, and inspire.

I had the chance to sit down with Patina for this week’s episode of The Weekly Dose of Joel, where we talked about her journey with running, how it fuels her stamina and discipline as a performer, and the joy she finds in mentoring the next generation. It’s a conversation that left me inspired, and I know it will do the same for you.
