Sophia Anne Caruso to Lead World Premiere of Duncan Sheik’s Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen

Sophia Anne Caruso will lead the world premiere of *Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen*, a new stage musical adaptation of Moyoco Anno’s acclaimed manga graphic novel, producers announced Wednesday. The musical features music and lyrics by two-time Tony Award winner Duncan Sheik and a book by Leah Nanako Winkler, with Tony Award winner Rob Ashford set to direct and choreograph the production.

Performances begin September 25 at The Night Egg at the Culture Club, a new Off-Broadway venue located at 530 West 27th Street. Opening night is set for October 15, with the limited engagement currently scheduled to run through January 3, 2027.

Based on Moyoco Anno’s award-winning manga graphic novel of the same name, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen marks the first Japanese manga to be adapted into an American musical.

Caruso will star as Colette, a young woman working at an elusive maison close called Night Egg in 20th-century Paris. As she begins documenting the fantasies, confessions and private sorrows of the establishment’s eccentric clientele, Colette discovers her own voice and power through writing. At the same time, she struggles to escape a destructive attachment to her childhood love, Léon.

Caruso is best known to Broadway audiences for originating the role of Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice. Her stage credits also include David Bowie’s Lazarus at New York Theatre Workshop and in London, Blackbird, The Nether and Grey House. On screen, she starred opposite Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington in Netflix’s The School for Good and Evil. Caruso will also release her debut album, ON ECSTATIC, in September.

The creative team also includes three-time Tony Award winner Scott Pask on scenic design, eight-time Tony Award winner Catherine Zuber on costume design, Brian Tovar on lighting design, Tony Award winner Cody Spencer on sound design and Tom Watson on hair and wig design. Casting is by The Telsey Office’s Patrick Goodwin.

The production will also introduce audiences to The Night Egg at the Culture Club. The venue takes its name from the club featured in Anno’s manga and occupies a space with its own history in New York nightlife and theater, having previously been home to the Twilo nightclub and Sleep No More.

Kenny Kurokawa, RAYMAN and Antonio Marion are producing the musical, with Nobu Matsukura and Shin Yamada serving as executive producers. Yu Anne Ando, Mika Furuya, Ryohei Otani and Yumi are associate producers, and Wagner Johnson Productions will serve as general managers.

Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
