Next spring, Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe Award winner Ayo Edebiri will join Academy Award nominee and 11-time Emmy nominee Don Cheadle in the first-ever New York revival of David Auburn’s Proof. The Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play will be directed by Tony Award winner Thomas Kail (Hamilton) and produced by Kail and Mike Bosner. Performances begin March 31, 2026, with an official opening on April 16 at a Shubert theater to be announced.

Edebiri, best known for her award-winning role as Sydney in FX’s The Bear, has quickly become one of the most celebrated multi-hyphenates of her generation. She recently earned her third consecutive Emmy nomination for acting and her first for directing. Her film and TV credits include Inside Out 2, Bottoms, Theater Camp, Abbott Elementary, and Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming After the Hunt.

Cheadle brings decades of acclaimed work across film and television, from his Oscar-nominated turn in Hotel Rwanda to his iconic role as James Rhodes in Marvel’s Avengers franchise. His stage career includes the Public Theater’s 2001 production of Topdog/Underdog, along with appearances at the Guthrie, the Goodman, and Shakespeare in the Park. With Proof, he returns to New York theater in his Broadway debut.

Proof tells the story of a young woman navigating her late father’s legacy as a brilliant mathematician, while confronting love, grief, and her own intellect. The creative team includes Kris Bowers (original music), Teresa L. Williams (scenic design), Dede Ayite (costumes), Amanda Zieve (lighting), and Daniel Swee, CSA (casting). Additional casting and ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks.
