Broadway is no stranger to star casting, but the pairing of Jim Parsons and Deborah Cox in Titanique feels especially electric and unexpected. In a recent conversation, the two offered a glimpse into their offstage dynamic. There’s a natural ease between them, grounded in both admiration and a shared sense of humor that’s already shaping the energy of the production.
Cox didn’t hold back when speaking about her co-star. “I have so many scenes with this one, and I’m so thrilled and excited,” she said. “To watch this incredible actor, it’s like a masterclass.” Parsons was quick to return the praise, recalling that one of his favorite rehearsal moments was hearing Cox sing “All By Myself” for the first time. “I got asked what my favorite moment in rehearsal so far has been,” he shared, “and I said the first time I heard Deborah singing ‘All By Myself.’” Still, he joked that capturing that moment has been nearly impossible, explaining that every time he tries to record it, “she just marks it” instead of fully belting. “Something in her knows, like, ‘Somebody’s recording this. Uh-uh. Not unless you pay,’” he laughed, with Cox playfully agreeing, “Not unless you pay.”
Beyond the jokes, Parsons was candid about what it’s been like stepping into the musical world. “I was so excited and I’m still excited,” he said, before admitting, “musicals are… so hard.” He described juggling scripts, music, and movement as overwhelming at times, even joking that he’s had moments where he thought, “they should recast.” Still, it’s that very challenge, along with the mix of humor and powerful vocals in Titanique, that has him hooked. As he put it, the show blends “high and low” in a way that makes the funny moments funnier and the emotional ones even more striking, especially when voices like Cox’s take center stage.
