Dolly Parton, Legendary Entertainer, Dies at 80

Dolly Parton, the beloved singer-songwriter, actress, philanthropist and businesswoman whose career spanned more than six decades, has died at the age of 80. Her death was announced Tuesday, August 25, in a video shared through Parton’s official social media channels by her nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver.

“Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens,” Seaver said in the family’s announcement. He concluded the message by honoring the many roles she held within their family and invoking one of her most enduring songs: “Rest in peace, Aunt Dolly. Aunt Granny. Gigi. May God bless Dolly Parton, and may God bless you all. She will always love you.”

Born in in Pittman Center, Tennessee, Parton rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential entertainers of her generation. Her expansive catalog included classics such as “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You,” while her work as an actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist made her impact extend far beyond country music. Through her Imagination Library, Parton also helped provide books to millions of children around the world.

Parton’s relationship with Broadway began with 9 to 5: The Musical, for which she wrote the music and lyrics. The adaptation opened at the Marquis Theatre in 2009 and earned four Tony Award nominations, including Best Original Score for Parton. Her life and music were set to take center stage once again in Dolly: A True Original Musical, featuring a book by Parton and Maria S. Schlatter, her greatest hits and new songs written especially for the production. The musical is currently scheduled to begin Broadway performances December 7 at the St. James Theatre and officially open January 19, 2027, which would have been Parton’s 81st birthday.
