A new production of Spring Awakening is set to return to New York this fall, as Seaview announces plans to stage the Tony Award-winning musical Off-Broadway at Studio Seaview.
The production will be directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor, whose recent work includes Broadway's The Outsiders and John Proctor is the Villain. Choreography will be by Celia Rowlson-Hall in her theatrical debut, with music supervision by Or Matias.
Featuring a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, Spring Awakening follows a group of late 19th century German adolescents as they explore teenage sexuality and repression through a contemporary rock score. The show debuted on Broadway in 2006 with future stars Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr., and was later revived in 2015 with Deaf West Theatre directed by Michael Arden.
According to Seaview, the new staging will place the musical in an intimate Off-Broadway setting, reconnecting audiences with the raw energy of Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, which was banned for decades due to its themes.
The announcement also revealed plans for open call auditions, which will take place on July 10 and July 11. Additional details about the audition process will be shared at a later date through the production's social media accounts.
Additional casting and performance details for the new Off-Broadway production are expected to be announced in the coming months. For ticket information and updates, visit the production's official website, springawakeningmusical.com.
